CORONADO QUARANTINE, DAY 55 – A MOMENT OF TURMOIL?

Long time no blog! During this quarantine, I’ve decided to get back into journaling and blogging in a more personal way, keeping both you and me entertained. You might feel like you’ve missed a lot, and honestly, you kind of have! But I’ll do my best to catch you up as we go along. In the meantime, stay safe and wash your hands.

Day 54 is here. We’ve been stuck inside for almost two months now in California, a place known for its high cost of living, especially regarding rent. With so many people out of work, I expected to see scenes reminiscent of the 1929 Great Depression, people desperately looking for jobs, resorting to extreme frugality like dumpster diving, or biking to work.

I couldn’t have been more wrong. Right now, people are ordering takeout with lines longer than I’ve ever seen, spending time on the beach, and crowding RV parks that are booked solid for the next month. It’s as if everyone around here is on an extended vacation.

I’ve been trying to find a contractor to install a mini-split AC unit in our RV for weeks. There’s this website where you can prepay for the job, and they supposedly send a contractor to complete it, like a TaskRabbit service. However, their “pros” keep canceling or rescheduling, and the two who did show up couldn’t do the job. I thought people would be fighting for work, but it seems home improvement is really taking off since it’s something people can do while staying home.

I’m now waiting on the fifth “pro” to show up and not holding my breath. It’s all very confusing. We’re printing money like it’s nothing, millions are unemployed, and yet nothing drastic is happening. No market crash, no crazy currency devaluation—just a seemingly endless summer camp for everyone until jobs resume.

I know some families are really struggling without savings or unemployment benefits, but around here, that doesn’t seem to be the case. My husband has been setting aside money in case real estate prices drop, so we can look into rentals. But for now, it feels like the bubble isn’t going to burst anytime soon.

If I can’t find someone to install the AC, we might just try to handle it ourselves over the long weekend.
